Pele

Goddess of Fire

Within the mythology of Hawaii’s Big Island, Pele is the Goddess of Fire, Lightning, Wind, and Volcanoes. Every volcanic eruption is said to be Pele’s way of expressing her longing to be with her true love.

Rather than focus upon her violent nature, I have shown her longing for love as she rises from within the expanding folds of the Earth’s mantel. She erupts within a column of fire.

The upper figure portion of the sculpture was carved from an Ironwood log, and the lower, earth portion, from the base of a Silver Maple tree. The Sculpture is 42” in diameter, and 62” in height
